Wamakko Denies Claims of Sharing ₦1,000 to IDPs, Orphans
The office of Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, has dismissed reports alleging that he distributed only ₦1,000 each to 10,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs), orphans and other vulnerable people in Sokoto State.
The senator’s office described the report as misleading and said it did not accurately reflect the scope of his Ramadan support programme.
Daily Star Nigeria gathered that the senator’s attention was drawn to a circulating story suggesting that the former governor of Sokoto State gave ₦1,000 each to thousands of vulnerable individuals during the ongoing Ramadan fast.
However, the office said the claim was a misrepresentation of the assistance being provided through his annual Ramadan outreach programme.
For more than five decades, Wamakko has been known for extending humanitarian support to different categories of people in Sokoto State and beyond, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
According to information obtained by Daily Star Nigeria, the senator has continued the tradition this year by distributing food items, clothing materials and cash to thousands of beneficiaries across the state.
On March 11, 2026, the lawmaker reportedly distributed wrappers and cash to about 17,000 female beneficiaries.
Similarly, on March 12, he provided guinea brocade (Shadda) and cash to about 50,000 male beneficiaries across the state.
On March 13, the senator also extended support to about 10,000 persons living with disabilities and elderly citizens, who received cash, Shadda materials and 10kg bags of rice each.
Youth groups and various associations also benefited from similar gestures the following day.
Further clarification indicated that the intervention involving IDPs, orphans and other vulnerable individuals included a donation of ₦10 million and 100 bundles of guinea brocade materials intended to support about 10,000 indigent citizens.
The assistance was reportedly distributed through the Sokoto State Zakat and Endowment Agency (SOZEA).
A statement issued by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Isma’il Muhammad Ibrahim, confirmed that the donation was handed over to the agency for distribution to the beneficiaries.
According to Wamakko, the support was meant to help less-privileged individuals, particularly orphans, share in the blessings and celebrations associated with the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr.
The Executive Secretary of SOZEA, Lawal Maidoki, commended the senator for the gesture, describing him as a compassionate leader who has consistently supported vulnerable members of society.
He noted that Wamakko’s humanitarian efforts over the years have benefited many disadvantaged people both within and outside Sokoto State.
