Nigerian troops have killed no fewer than 61 terrorists following a fierce gun battle in Malam Fatori, Borno State, as part of ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast.

Daily Star Nigeria gathered that the operation was carried out by troops under Operation Hadin Kai, in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force, after suspected ISWAP fighters launched an attack on military positions.

Daily Star Nigeria gathered that the insurgents attempted to overrun the troops using a combination of drone surveillance and ground assault tactics, but were met with heavy and coordinated firepower from the military.

The attackers were eventually forced to retreat after suffering heavy losses, with at least 61 of them neutralised during the encounter, according to information obtained by Daily Star Nigeria.

A few soldiers were said to have sustained minor injuries during the clash and have since been treated and stabilised.

The incident highlights ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to curb insurgency in Borno State, one of the major hotspots in the country’s prolonged battle against terrorist groups.
