The Chairman of the National Council of Ulama of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), Jos Headquarters, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately remove the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, from office.

Daily Star Nigeria learnt that the cleric made the call during the 33rd Annual National Seminar of JIBWIS, a three-day event held at the Saddeqa Event Centre, Jos, Plateau State.

According to Sheikh Jingir, the appointment of Prof. Amupitan was “vehemently rejected by Muslims,” insisting that the INEC chairman lacks the moral standing to oversee Nigeria’s electoral process.

“How can you appoint a Christian who insults Muslims to preside over the nation’s electoral body? I personally rejected this appointment,” Jingir said.

“I stated my position in the presence of Mr President and also conveyed my stand in writing.”

The JIBWIS leader further alleged that Prof. Amupitan had previously authored a legal brief that promoted what he described as false narratives of Christian genocide, alongside derogatory remarks against Muslims and the Hausa-Fulani ethnic group.

Daily Star Nigeria reports that Prof. Amupitan has, in recent times, come under mounting pressure from several Muslim organisations, including the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria, all demanding his immediate removal as INEC chairman over the controversial legal document.
