SCSN Demands Removal of INEC Chairman
The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has again called for the removal of INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, saying he cannot conduct a fair election.
Daily Star Nigeria gathered that the council, in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Nafi’u Baba Ahmad, said the demand is not about religion or ethnicity but about competence and past actions.
The council cited a 2020 petition reportedly led by Amupitan, which they claim contained abusive language against Muslims, Northern Nigeria, and Usman Danfodio, and falsely linked current security challenges to historical events. They also criticized the alleged international circulation of the petition, saying it portrayed Nigeria as a country where Christians lack religious freedom.
SCSN added that INEC leadership requires neutrality in religion and ethnicity, and warned that it would not accept elections conducted under Professor Amupitan.
