Daily Star gathered that the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has abolished the Ministry of Higher Education and removed Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo from his role as commissioner. The ministry’s functions have been merged into the Ministry of Education as part of reforms aimed at improving coordination, reducing duplication, and cutting governance costs in the state’s education sector.

The former ministry, previously overseen by the deputy governor, will now operate as a Directorate of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, headed by a permanent secretary. Agencies such as the Scholarship Board and other tertiary oversight bodies will report through the new structure.

The decision comes amid rising political tensions between Governor Yusuf and his deputy. Reports indicate that Gwarzo did not join the governor’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), and is facing impeachment proceedings over alleged misconduct.

Observers say this is one of the most significant cabinet changes in Kano State in recent months, with potential impacts on the state’s education sector.
