By Mustapha Muhammad Tukur
In a bid to tackle learning gaps and improve literacy and numeracy skills among students, especially adolescent girls, the AGILE Project in Sokoto State on Tuesday hosted Aisha Gbemisola Yussuff, Founder of the Gbemisola Yussuff Foundation, for a strategic partnership meeting, Daily Star Nigeria reports.
Welcoming the delegation, the System Strengthening Officer reiterated AGILE’s mission to remove barriers preventing girls from attending and succeeding in school. He highlighted the importance of building partnerships that enhance teaching quality and student learning outcomes.
During the meeting, Aisha Gbemisola Yussuff presented findings from the Foundation’s extensive school assessments across Sokoto State, revealing that many students at both Junior and Senior Secondary School levels struggle with basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills in English and Hausa. She detailed the Foundation’s Literacy and Numeracy Recovery Programme, which currently spans 100 schools across six education zones. The initiative includes weekly monitoring, structured daily lesson plans, teacher mentoring, and student motivation schemes such as Star of the Week certificates. She also stressed the urgent need for large-scale teacher training, noting that many secondary school teachers have gone decades without formal professional development.
In his remarks, Dr. Mansur Isah Buhari, Sokoto State Project Coordinator for AGILE, commended the Foundation’s efforts, describing them as timely and transformative. Dr. Buhari reaffirmed the Sokoto State Government’s commitment to education reform and assured that AGILE is ready to collaborate fully to bridge foundational learning gaps, improve teacher quality, and ensure girls not only return to school but thrive academically.
The Monitoring and Evaluation Officer added that student and teacher motivation, accountability, and performance tracking would be central to the success of the partnership, including recognition of outstanding teaching practices.
The meeting concluded with both parties expressing a strong commitment to deeper collaboration, aimed at strengthening teaching quality, improving learning outcomes, and securing brighter futures for children across Sokoto State, Daily Star Nigeria reports.
