INEC Reschedules 2027 Elections: Fixes Presidential, NASS Polls on January 16 2027
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced new dates for the 2027 general elections, bringing the exercise forward by several weeks.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, the presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on January 16, 2027.
Daily Star Nigeria learned that INEC also fixed February 6, 2027, for the conduct of governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections across the country.
The electoral body explained that the adjustment became necessary following recent changes in the nation’s electoral legal framework.
Prior to the review, the commission had scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly polls were to take place on March 6, 2027.
However, the timetable was revised after the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, which required a realignment of the election calendar in compliance with the new law.
INEC assured political parties, stakeholders, and the electorate that detailed guidelines and timelines for party primaries, campaigns, and other electoral activities will be released in due course.
