Tinubu Sacks IGP Egbetokun, Appoints Tunji Disu as Successor
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the removal of Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The development was first reported by Sahara Reporters, which Daily Star Nigeria reliably monitored and sourced for this report.
Multiple senior police officers and sources within the Police Service Commission were quoted as confirming on Tuesday that Egbetokun has been directed to hand over to Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police currently overseeing the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.
According to the report, Egbetokun visited the Presidential Villa on Monday, where he was instructed to prepare his handover notes ahead of the leadership transition.
Sources cited in the report indicated that the decision was influenced by concerns over controversies that trailed his tenure, as well as health-related considerations.
The development was also said to have generated mixed reactions within the Nigeria Police Force, with some officers reportedly welcoming the change.
Egbetokun’s time in office had been marked by sustained public debate, particularly over the extension of his tenure beyond the statutory retirement limits of 60 years of age or 35 years of service.
Civil society organisations and critics had argued that the extension contravened established police service regulations, raising concerns about institutional discipline, due process and perceived preferential treatment.
Tunji Disu is expected to assume duties immediately, pending formal confirmation and further directives from the relevant authorities.
