President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 into law, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic process, Daily Trust reports.

The signing ceremony took place on Wednesday at the State House, Abuja, following the bill’s passage by the National Assembly on Tuesday after months of deliberations.

Present at the event were the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, alongside other top government officials.

Speaking after signing the bill, President Tinubu stressed that the essence of democracy lies in robust discussions aimed at national development and nation-building, describing such engagement as crucial to the country’s stability.

The President said it was time for Nigerians to regain full confidence in the nation’s electoral system.

“It’s not as important as the historical aspects of this. What is crucial is the fact that you manage the process to the extent that there will be no confusion, no disenfranchisement of Nigerians, and that we are all going to see democracy flourish,” Tinubu stated.

He further noted that no matter how well-designed a system may be, it is ultimately managed and sustained by the people.

“No matter how good the system is, it’s managed by the people, promoted by the people, and the result is finalised by the people,” he added.

The new law is expected to introduce fresh reforms aimed at strengthening electoral transparency, improving process management, and enhancing voter confidence across the country.

Political analysts say the development could shape preparations ahead of future general elections and redefine Nigeria’s democratic framework.
