Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have taken former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, into custody after he spent two nights in the care of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged financial improprieties, the cable reports.

Sources familiar with the development disclosed that El-Rufai was picked up on Wednesday night at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja shortly after concluding his engagement with the anti-graft agency.

According to insiders, investigators at the commission made several attempts to obtain a written statement from the former governor during the interrogation. However, he reportedly declined to provide any written response throughout the period of questioning.

El-Rufai had earlier presented himself at the EFCC headquarters on Monday following an invitation linked to allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure as Kaduna State governor between 2015 and 2023.

The reasons for the DSS intervention and the specific issues under investigation by the secret police were yet to be officially disclosed as of press time.

The development has sparked widespread reactions across the political space, with observers describing the move as a dramatic turn in the ongoing probe involving the former governor.

Efforts to get official confirmation from both the DSS and EFCC were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
