The Federal Government has deployed troops to parts of Kwara State following a brutal attack on rural communities that reportedly left more than 170 people dead, Daily Star Nigeria gathered.

According to a report by Reuters, the attack occurred in remote villages within Kaiama Local Government Area, where gunmen, believed to be extremist fighters, stormed the communities late on Tuesday. Residents said the attackers targeted villagers who refused to submit to their demands, killing men, women and children in the process.

Local sources quoted in the report disclosed that dozens of homes were set ablaze during the assault, forcing survivors to flee into nearby bushes for safety. Many of the victims were said to be farmers and villagers caught off guard by the sudden violence.

Reacting to the incident, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu strongly condemned the killings, describing them as barbaric and unacceptable. He ordered the immediate deployment of military forces to the affected area to restore calm and prevent further attacks.

Reuters also reported that the affected communities are located near Nigeria’s border regions, which have in recent years witnessed increasing infiltration by armed groups and extremist factions. Security experts have warned that such groups may be attempting to expand their influence beyond their traditional strongholds.

Meanwhile, fears continue to grow among residents of neighbouring states as insecurity spreads across parts of northern Nigeria. Daily Star Nigeria reports that security agencies have assured citizens that efforts are ongoing to track down those responsible and bring them to justice.
